Butler County Democrats Chair Says Supreme Court ROE V. WADE Ruling Will Harm PA’s Most Vulnerable Citizens

Butler County, PA – Today’s Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade marks a giant step backward for the rights of anyone of childbearing age in this country and a looming threat in Pennsylvania, said Catherine Lalonde, Chair of the Butler County Democratic Committee. Lalonde, a former nurse, said the 6-3 decision shattered 50 years of established law by ruling that health care for pregnancy and abortions can be decided by state legislatures instead of by doctors and patients. “By overturning Roe, the court will ultimately deny women autonomy over their own bodies and health care choices,” she said. “In Pennsylvania we are fortunate that Governor Tom Wolf will veto any legislation that curtails women’s rights, as he has in the past. But his term ends in January 2023. And the Republican candidate for governor has promised that if he wins, anyone who is pregnant will have to carry that pregnancy to term, with no exceptions for incest, rape, or the health of the mother. The lasting harm to unwilling mothers is unimaginable.” According to the Pew Research Center, a 61% majority of U.S. adults say abortion should be legal. But the conservative majority on the Supreme Court has chosen to defy that majority and instead follow the dictates of a minority of Republican extremists. Lalonde asked if Pennsylvania’s Republican legislators who want to ban abortion also want to use tax dollars to: Pay for the delivery and pediatric care for these infants? Ensure the child-bearers have proper prenatal and postpartum care? Help ensure the parent and child have safe housing and enough to eat? Cover child-care costs so the mother can work? “We know that Republicans would answer ‘no’ to these questions,” Lalonde said. “Banning abortion will harm our most vulnerable citizens.” The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of any developed country and that mortality rate is higher than it has been in decades. The Court’s decision to overturn Roe will only worsen these grim statistics. Lalonde said, “We are not willing to prioritize an embryo’s rights over those of a mother. “Democrats in Butler County will be working with all our energy to ensure that, at least in Pennsylvania, women keep the right to control their own bodies and health care decisions, and that their lives are valued and protected by the law. This will begin by supporting Democratic Attorney General Josh Shapiro for governor in November. We encourage every Pennsylvanian who cares about the lives of women to do the same.”
